The first recorded Masses in Woodville began in the 1940’s when La Salette missionary priests from St. Patrick Church in Lufkin, TX would make the trip to celebrate Mass in the homes of the few Catholic families in Tyler County. In 1950 a small mission church was built on Temple Street in Woodville. It was named St. Lawrence Church and was canonically established as a mission of the parish in Lufkin. In 1951 St. Michael Church was established in Jasper and St. Lawrence Church was placed under its care. As the Catholic community in Tyler County grew in the 1960’s money was raised to purchase 7.5 acres of land on Highway 287 and to build a church on the site. When dedicated on April12,1970 the church was named Our Lady of the Pines Church in order to honor the Blessed Mother and the beautiful area of the Piney Woods of East Texas. The continued growth of the parish led to its being elevated from a mission status to that of a parish on June 1, 1973 thus allowing it to have its first resident priest. During its history, the parish has been served by priests of the La Salette Missionaries and the Diocese of Beaumont.
